At ICAN, we provide detailed autism assessment from toddlerhood to adulthood. We provide home and center-based ABA therapy.
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) consists of a series of structured and semi-structured tasks that involve social interaction between the examiner and the subject. Dr. Torabian herself is trained in using ADOS. She observes and identifies segments of the client’s behavior and assigns these to predetermined observational categories. It usually takes 45-50 minutes to complete ADOS.
Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) is a structured interview conducted with the parents of the referred individual and covers the subjects full developmental history. It usually takes 45-60 minutes to complete ADI-R.
Today, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for autism. Studies have demonstrated that many children with autism experience significant improvements in learning, reasoning, communication and adaptability when they participate in high-quality ABA programs. Some preschoolers who participate in early intensive ABA for two or more years acquire sufficient skills to participate in regular classrooms with little or no additional support. Other children learn many important skills, but still need additional educational support to succeed in a classroom. Effective ABA intervention for autism is not a “one size fits all” approach. At ICAN, our skilled therapist work closely with families and children to customize the intervention to each learner’s skills, needs, interests, preferences and family situation.
Researchers have found that children with autism are five times more likely to have mealtime challenges such as tantrums, extreme food selectivity, pickiness & ritualistic eating behaviors. They also found inadequate nutrition to be more common among children with autism than in those unaffected by the disorder. In particular, they found an overall low intake of calcium and protein. In addition, many children with autism suffer from indigestive problems such severe bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. At ICAN, parents can closely consult with our Registered Dietitian (RD) who is specialized with working with families and children with autism to explore different diets and find the best solutions that can improve the lives of children and their families.
The rates of divorce, parents and sibling depression, and substance abuse are very high among families of children with autism. At ICAN, our specialized Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist provide individual therapy for children, teens and adults with autism as well as mothers, couples, family, and sibling counseling.
